On 22nd February 2012, 20mph limits were put on the Council's Infrastructure Plan Prioritisation list. This meant that the councillors from Chichester South County Local Committee meeting decided that they would agree to work being done to consult on 20mph limits in Chichester. Officers are now looking into preparing some sort of consultation documents. The councillors also decided to proceed to a Traffic Regulation Order on just the residential streets - excluding the arterials and busy gyratory systems in the city which people are afraid of cycling on.
We will continue to campaign to make all the streets of Chichester safe for vulnerable cyclists and pedestrians. We do not know when the official consultation period for the Traffic Regulation Order will be - perhaps as late as September 2012. This will be three weeks when people are allowed to write in to the council to get their views known.
Then we will have to wait till November 2012 to find out what the councillors decide to do about the replies from the consultation. We will need to make sure that lots of people make their views known on this matter.
So we have a long summer of campaigning ahead of us. We are starting by delivering posters to the households on our street surveys which signed up to 20's plenty last year.
Then we will hopefully spread our poster campaign to new streets.
We hope to take part in the City Gala on 2nd June and are looking for volunteers to take part and help us make t-shirts. We will hand out fliers and posters/stickers on the day to raise awareness on the day. Please get in touch if you could join in on the day.
